The winners of the 2nd Tango Music Composition Competition
The 2nd Tango Music Composition Competition was realized successfully for the second consecutive year by Cosmopolis Festival and Kavalatino, in the framework of Kavala Tango Days 2023.
Among all the compositions submitted to the Competition, composers Maria Dagalaki, Eleni Exarchou, Dimitris Karavitis, Dimitris Papikas, Amalia Eleftheriadou from Greece and Dr Daxter Yeo from Australia reached the final stage. The 6 tangos were performed for the first time worldwide by the TANGartO Quintet (along with guest musicians Rebekka Meletiadou – flute, Epameinondas Tzivenis – violin, Zoe Barba – cello) and were danced by the tango dancers Sebastian Jimenez and Maria Belen Giachello, Gabriel Marino and Vasia Thanopoulou, Lucas Gauto and Naima Gerasopoulou during the performance “Tango Moments: From Yesterday to Today” at the Great Clubhouse of Kavala, Greece, on Saturday, November 4, 2023.
The jury consisted of Costas Tsougras (composer and Assistant Professor at the Department of Music Studies of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) – president, George Panagiotopoulos, (musician of the ERT Symphony Orchestra, leader of the Tangarto Quintet) – member, and Alekos Papadopoulos, (musician, composer, dancer and tango teacher, member of Tango Orchestra Locos de Atar) – member, decided to award “Το τανγκό της εμμονής” by Eleni Exarchou with the first prize of 750 euro, “Tango metamorhoses” by Dimitris Papikas with the second prize of 500 euro, and “Lo siento” by Dimitris Karavitis with the third prize of 250 euro along with the audience award. Award-winning composers undertake that in any future public performance, publication or recording, their work must be accompanied by the title “Kavala Tango Days 2023 Award”.
